Change the Organ Donation register from the OPT IN system to the OPT OUT system.

The issue

Zeke was born with a rare condition called Maple Syrup Urine Disease. When he was well he was a healthy normal child, but when he was sick, he was really sick.

Late in 2013 the call came that a liver was selected for Zeke. 24hrs later he was cured of  this condition and now leads a healthy life free of illness and seizures.

Somewhere out there, that day, a family made a difficult decision to donate their loved ones organs - one donation can save up to 8 lives!

We believe that every registered birth should be automatically registered as an organ donor!

Organ Donation is extremely important. As many as 1500 people are on the register at any given time, and time is something many of them don't have.

We want to encourage the Australian Government to change the system. Every registered birth should be registered as an organ donor, with the potential to opt out if you do not wish to donate.

Many people do not discuss their wishes with family and friends, and families are unable to cope with making this difficult decision in terrible times.

The change of system would encourage people to think more seriously about organ donation and encourage further discussion.

25/02/2015:

OTA's chief executive Yael Cass said family knowledge of organ donation decisions was a key factor in determining consent.

"Families who have discussed and know the donation decision of their loved ones are much more likely to say yes to donation," Ms Cass said.

Request to families for donation were made in about 680 cases in 2014, with about 415 families consenting.

ORGAN DONATIONS IN AUSTRALIA 2014:

* About 1500 people are on the Australian organ transplant waiting lists at any one time

* Kidneys are the predominant organ donated and transplanted

* 659 kidneys were transplanted from deceased organ donors, up two per cent

* 237 livers were transplanted, down six per cent

* 159 lungs were transplanted, down five per cent

* 79 hearts were transplanted, up three per cent

2016:

At the end of October, a record 1,161 Australians and their families benefited from an organ transplant through the generosity of 409 deceased organ donors and their families.

203 living organ donors provided kidney or partial liver donations, and thousands more became tissue donors.
