Increase the punishment for animal abuse causing death - 5 years' imprisonment is not enough
The issue
The SMH article Puppy killer Nathan Thompson banned from keeping animals for 10 years (2015) states that under the Section 530 of the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW), the maximum sentence for animal abuse is five years' imprisonment. Nathan Thompson, due back in court on April 28th, was recently arrested for brutally murdering 9 puppies in cold blood and he pleaded guilty. The huge difference in sentencing strongly suggests the current laws imply murdering a helpless creature is a less serious offence than murdering a human being? Society needs to close the gap on the sanctions: maximum sentence of imprisonment for animals is five years but the murderer of a person could be sentenced up to life? This crime is murder, so treat it like one nonetheless.
The government needs to recognise changing times and changing values. Animals are vulnerable creatures and are meant to be cared for, looked after once under ownership and legal adoption. The law needs to amend and increase this flawed maximum sentence of five years imprisonment which is not substantial and definitely does not meet society's needs. Animals have rights too.
I cannot understand people who abuse animals. I cannot fathom why the government hasn't enacted harsher sanctions which deter this abusive and dangerous behaviour or at least punish to the necessary degree, deluded people who believe it is excusable to hurt an animal, let alone kill him or her.
To the Australian government, wake up and open your eyes.
We need change.
