Australia must act: National Firearms Buyback to prevent more mass shootings

The issue

Fear is too easily misdirected toward entire communities, holding people responsible for violence far beyond their control. The Bondi mass shooting is a devastating reminder of what happens when that fear intersects with access to firearms. Australia has acted before — decisively and successfully — after Port Arthur. We must do so again! Illegal guns remain in circulation, lives are at risk, and inaction is no longer acceptable. Sign this petition to call on the Australian Government to introduce a new National Firearms Buyback Scheme and prevent the next tragedy.

---

Jewish Australians — like all Australians — should never be blamed for violence or political decisions made elsewhere. Yet fear and hostility can spread quickly, and when firearms are involved, that hostility can be deadly. Hate feeds on ignorance, and guns amplify its harm. Lives should not be lost simply because action isn’t taken.

The Bondi mass shooting is a stark reminder that gun violence is not abstract policy — it shatters families, traumatizes communities, and claims lives. Australia has shown that decisive action works: after Port Arthur, the 1996 National Firearms Buyback Scheme removed over 600,000 firearms and dramatically reduced gun deaths. Lives were saved.

Today, illegal guns still circulate, with estimates between 260,000 and 600,000. The current National Firearms Amnesty is clearly insufficient. The Australian Government must act with the same courage and leadership it showed in 1996. A new National Firearms Buyback Scheme is urgently needed to remove illegal weapons and prevent future tragedies.

Lives are at stake — the lives of neighbours, friends, families, and innocent children. Australia must choose safety, compassion, and action. Sign this petition and demand our leaders act now!

We call on Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Attorney-General Michelle Rowland, Minister for Home Affairs Tony Burke, and Assistant Minister the Hon Julian Hill MP to act without delay.
