Australia: Hold Iran accountable for human rights violations. #OneMahsaTooMany
The issue
PREAMBLE
Mahsa (‘Zhina’) Amini has become a symbol of resistance that has united the people of Iran following her fatal assault by the Iranian Regime's (the "Regime") morality police, with protesters explicitly calling for regime change.
The Regime is continuing to unleash its brutal reign of terror with impunity by murdering and arresting protesters (including children and teenagers) and must be held accountable for its massacre of Iranians.
We are a group of Iranian community members living in Australia who are fed up with the continued suppression of the rights of our people in Iran.
We are grateful that the Australian government has condemned the deadly crackdown by the Iranian regime. We need more action from Australia and ask the government to stand with the people of Iran.
We have heard the harrowing tales of young women such as Nika Shakarami and Sarina Esmailzadeh who were violently murdered by security forces, Hadis Najafi who was shot to the head and chest at least 6 times by security forces, and the abduction of reporter Niloofar Hamedi who took the infamous photograph of Mahsa as she lay in a deep coma on a hospital bed.
Hundreds of protesters have been murdered in the latest round of bloodshed and rising. The count of those who have been arrested or disappeared remains unknown but their unfortunate stories are shared by their family and friends on social media.
Recent reports from activists on the ground in the Sistan Balochistan province have reported that the Regime’s police massacred over 80 people on 30 September 2022 following unrest in response to the abduction and rape of a 15-year-old Balochi girl by police.
Student protesters at a majority of universities in Iran, including Sharif University in Tehran, were surrounded by hundreds of anti-riot police with gunshots being reported and university students being attacked and abducted by the police.
We have had One Mahsa Too Many. Enough is Enough!
The time has come for women, LGBTQIA+ persons, and ethnic and religious minorities in Iran to access the same basic human rights that people around the world enjoy.
RESOLUTION
The Australian government can no longer be complicit in its silence.
We urge the Australian government to be the voice of the voiceless people of Iran and hereby call upon the Prime Minister, the Foreign Affairs Minister and the Australian parliament to:
1. Appeal to UN Secretary General António Guterres to call for a referendum in Iran conducted under the auspices of the UN.
2. Cut ties with the Regime and end the policy of appeasement that has characterised the relationship between the west and the Regime.
3. Enact targeted diplomatic and economic sanctions, including freezing assets and finances of Regime officials and their dependents in Western banks.
4. Strongly condemn the Regime for its human rights violations.
5. List the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist entity under Australian law.
6. Enact Magnitsky Sanctions against perpetrators, members and agents of the IRGC and its derivatives, and Regime officials responsible for these crackdowns, human rights violations and deaths.
7. Refer perpetrators, members and agents of the IRGC, and Regime officials responsible for crimes against humanity to the International Criminal Court (when they are in countries outside of Iran).
8. Support the UN to enter Iran to conduct an independent examination of human rights violations pre-dating and following Mahsa’s fatal assault.
9. Call for the Regime to be removed from the UN Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW).
10. Recall the Australian Ambassador to Iran.
11. Expel the Iranian Ambassador in Canberra and close the Iranian Embassy and Consulate.
12. Deny Regime officials and their dependents from entering Australia.
13. Call on the Regime to immediately:
i. cease the indiscriminate and violent attacks on countless Iranians; and,
ii. release all demonstrators, political prisoners, students and countless others who have been imprisoned for speaking out against the Regime.
