Hey friends!
You might’ve seen some headlines lately claiming support for keeping Australia Day on Jan 26 is growing.
But here’s the thing those polls just ask if people want to “keep or change the date.”
They don’t offer an alternative.
We did something different. We presented a common sense solution, the Australian Long Weekend and got a very different result. You can sign this petition here.
54% of Australian voters said they’d prefer a guaranteed long weekend on the second-last Monday in January, which never falls on Jan 26.
This option gives us a summer break, avoids harm, and creates space for truth-telling, reflection, and respectful celebration. And when given that choice, the majority are ready to move forward.
Support spans generations:
70% of people aged 18–24
63% aged 25–34
59% aged 35–49
51% aged 50–64
Only Australians aged 65+ were opposed.
It’s also backed across the country, in cities, suburbs, regional towns and rural areas.
We know that January 26 is not a date to celebrate.
It’s a day that carries deep pain for many, especially for First Nations people and increasingly, Australians are recognising that.
So however you spend the day, we just want to say: take care of yourself and your community. And if you have the space, we invite you to have a conversation about this idea, about the future, about what Australia Day could look like.
Because the truth is, figuring out what the alternative to Jan 26 looks like is a conversation worth having.
