Australia Day - Jan 26 - Not A Date To Celebrate
The issue
We are calling for the urgent recognition that January 26 is not a date for national celebration.
For many Australians, Jan 26 is celebrated as "Australia Day," marking the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet and establishment of the ‘Port Jackson’ colony. However, for First Nations people, the day is one of mourning, survival, and remembrance. It represents the invasion of Aboriginal lands, the disruption of cultures, the loss of lives, and an enduring legacy of trauma passed down through generations.
Although Australia often prides itself on being a diverse and inclusive nation, continuing to celebrate on January 26 disregards the voices and lived experiences of First Nations people. This celebration, which only became an official public holiday in 1994, fails to embody the values of unity, respect, and reconciliation.
The Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese has already rejected calls to change Australia Day By signing this petition, we are urging him to reconsider and demonstrate leadership by acknowledging the profound significance of this date and the harm that celebrating "Australia Day" on January 26 continues to inflict on Indigenous communities.
We need meaningful action to ensure January 26 is no longer celebrated as "Australia Day." This petition does not propose an alternative date but is inviting supporters to consider the idea of creating an Australian Long Weekend in Jan.
We are calling on the PM to create clear timeline and a commitment to engage in thoughtful dialogue with all Australians, especially First Nations people.
This is an opportunity for our government to demonstrate true commitment to the values of inclusion and respect. Acknowledging the pain associated with January 26 is not about division—it’s about healing.
Jan 26 is not a date to celebrate!
