Build a Bike Skills Park

Build a Bike Skills Park
The Issue
Austin has a great reputation in the mountain biking world, and it needs to meet the demand for progressive and legitimate places to develop riding skills for riders of all ages.
Mountain biking, as a sport, has become increasingly popular in recent years. Austin's fair climate and expansive green spaces have allowed for a culture to develop around mountain biking. While there are several sanctioned areas for traditional cross country mountain biking, there are no legitimate areas for building the rider skill set. There is overwhelming demand for this opportunity locally and it has not been met.
Many communities around the United States have recognized this need and are moving forward with bike skills park construction. Great examples of such established parks are Valmont Bike Park in Boulder, Co., Golden Bike Park in Golden, Co., Lyons Bike Park in Lyons, Co. and the Colonnade in Seattle, Wa. All of these cities have relationships with the community of cyclists that is fostered by allowing volunteers to come together and share their pride in the city by helping shape the recreational opportunities. There is even the possibility of urban area reclamation, as this was a major benefit of building the Colonnade in Seattle, Wa.
In order for Austin to continue growing in mountain biking world and meeting the needs of the community, the City of Austin must recognize and establish a facility for the biking community. A volunteer-supported bike skills park would be the best method to unite the community and provide a wonderful resource for adults, children and families to enjoy healthy outdoor activity. The opportunity to learn the basics of riding on dirt will help the user base grow and participate more safely in the sport, while encouraging civic and community development.
Most importantly, a safe and fun environment for children and adults will promote healthy activity and appreciation for our city.
