We hereby request the immediate removal of the name of Robert A. Millikan from Millikan Middle School Affiliated Charter & Performing Arts Magnet, including his name on buildings, programs and open spaces located at 5041 Sunnyslope Avenue, Sherman Oaks, CA 91423.

LAUSD must recognize Millikan’s role in promoting the openly racist doctrine of eugenics and policies of forced sterilization and segregation in schools and housing and renounce such racism by removing his name.

A recent L.A. Time article dated 7/8/2020 entitled “Caltech faces reckoning over its links to eugenics and sterilization movement” (https://www.latimes.com/business/story/2020-07-07/caltech-robert-millikan-eugenics-sterilization) explains Millikan’s racist philosophy which cannot be ignored or tolerated by allowing his name to remain at a LAUSD middle school with approximately 1,700 students.

Students currently attending Millikan Middle School are taught about Millikan’s scientific prowess, but they never learn about his racist philosophy and active involvement in the “Eugenics” movement, as well as supporting female gender discrimination and anti-Semitism.

Action must be taken immediately to remove Millikan’s name from our local middle school.
