It has recently come to my attention that Aurora University has decided to eliminate the December commencement ceremony, making December graduates participate in the May 2024 commencement ceremony if they wish to participate. As a student who will have my degree completed by December I will already have a job using the degree I earned. It seems out of place to celebrate a completed degree 5 months after earning it. The decision to eliminate the December commencement ceremony should not be based on previous students' opinions. Typically, students have the opportunity to make their own decision about participating in the commencement ceremony, and that is what should be done in December. It is well deserved to have a commencement ceremony in December, as students have worked hard for their degrees, and should have an opportunity to walk and receive their diploma. Commencement is an opportunity for students to celebrate hard work and accomplishments with friends and family. Not to mention students that are graduating in December were impacted by the hardships of Covid and did not all get a high school or community college graduation. This is a point in their college education that students look forward to and is well deserved to celebrate. Students who graduate in December should not have to wait until May to do so.
