Why this petition matters

Started by Julliette Gonzales

These pass 2 years have been a whirlwind for APS. From red lockdowns and deans with guns to the multiple suicides of students. One thing these issues have in common is mental health. APS needs to acknowledge that there is a serious and life threatening issue being completely ignored. APS needs to take responsibility and provide adequate support for staff and students to prevent these tragic events from happening. Mental health is often looked over is schools. And still after all the traumatic events the district has encountered we still lack the proper mental health resources. Many of these issues could be avoided if we create more outlets and ways for people of our district to express their emotions in healthy ways. Recently a student from Aurora Central High school killed themselves which most definitely could have been prevented if they felt safe enough to talk about the things that were going on in their home and their school. We continuously wonder what we could’ve done to save that child’s life, or every child lost to mental health. However wondering isn’t making progress we need to stop asking what we could have done and start asking what we’re going to do.
