Katie Sawyer started this petition to Aurora Police Department and

On August 2, Brittney Gilliam took her nieces, younger sister and daughter out for what should have been a fun outing to the nail salon. Instead, they were confronted by armed police officers who pointed their loaded weapons at the children and ordered them to get on the ground. The children, the youngest of which was 6 years old, were handcuffed and forced to lay face down on the parking lot ground while they wailed for their mother.

The dozen officers on-scene claim the family's car came up as stolen, which was not true. Instead of checking, all of the officers chose to hold children at gunpoint. These children, ages 17, 14, 12 and 6 years old, were emotionally traumatized by the officers' negligent and callous behavior. The Aurora Police Chief Vanessa Wilson admitted herself that the officers had "made a mistake" and that the children “may have been traumatized.”

The officers on scene did more than "make a mistake," they traumatized children permanently and planted seeds of distrust in the community.

However, none of the officers responsible have faced any repercussions for their actions. No child should fear for their life during a traffic stop, and if the officers on-scene had shown any restraint, used any of their "extensive" training or field knowledge, these children would not have been forever scarred by Sunday's events.

The Aurora Police Department is already under investigation for their serious miscarriage of justice in the case of Elijah McClain, a young Black man murdered by police in August 2019.

The Gilliam family is also Black.

1. We demand immediate action to terminate all of the officers responsible for this family's trauma.

2. We demand that Aurora Police Department holds ALL of their officers accountable for racial bias.

3. We demand better policy for stolen vehicles, and at bare minimum, the expectation that officers will not take a faulty computer system at face value and think just a little bit critically before pointing a loaded weapon at a 6 year old.
