No Factory Chicken Farming

No Factory Chicken Farming
The Issue
Foster Farms chicken farming is going to create a mass health and safety issues with in our communities. Poultry manure creates nitrogen and when broken down by bacteria that creates ammonia. Ammonia levels spike mainly during cold wet months, so eight months out of the year for Oregon. A single human can smell about 5 ppm of ammonia before causing damage to the lungs. Foster Farms chicken factories produce 550,000 chickens per factory, with about 25 ppm of ammonia being dispersed into the air. The ammonia can travel about 7 mile radius of the factories. I could only imagine what this means for our economic growth within our communities. Ammonias effects on one’s body is chronic irritation of eyes, dermatitis, chronic cough, asthma and lung fibrosis. To continue, with why we should not have Foster Farms factories in our communities. Our every day service and ground water which means drinking water will be contaminated by poultry manure. The nitrogen is converted to a nitrate too much nitrate in one’s body, can effect how the blood carries oxygen. This means heart disease and hypertension caused in ones body. Overall if having foster farms factories can cause detrimental health concerns to our community why would they be here? Also, may I add that Looking at the agriculture of eastern Oregon it would be way more suitable for chicken farming, without risk to people’s health or economic growth.
