Augustus St Gaudens Playground to Maintain Current Fence Height. NO TO 4FEET!

Augustus St Gaudens Playground to Maintain Current Fence Height. NO TO 4FEET!
The Issue
Our families, friends and children attend P.S. 40 and Salk Middle School.
Like any parent or concerned Gramercy Community Member, the safety and security of our children is our utmost priority. The proposed renovation of Augustus St Gaudens Park includes lowering the protective fencing from the current height to between 4+ feet. While the intention is to craft a more inviting atmosphere for all NYC Parks under their "Parks Without Borders" iniative, this change raises critical concerns regarding the safety of our children and the local community.
By decreasing the height of these fences, it inadvertently makes it simpler for individuals who are not affiliated with our school community to enter the park premises. Decreasing the fencing also temps children to leave the playground to chase a ball, toy or be lured by dangerous individuals. This exposes our children, our students, to unnecessary risks, comprising their security during school hours and any events or playtime scheduled thereafter. An approachable environment is something we certainly advocate for, but not when it compromises the safety standards that have been in place to protect our families.
We met with Neil Barclay, Community Board 6 Board Member and the Chair of the Parks Landmarks & Cultural Affairs. He is aware of the community's safety concerns with lowering the fence. He recognizes that these concerns are legitimate.
Furthermore, considering the Department of Education's influence over playground facilities, it is imperative that they too recognize and prioritize safety for all students and families using these spaces. Currently P.S. 40 and Salk Middle School have had years of construction and only have the Augustus St Gaudens DOE playground to have recess. It is promised both schools will need to use this updated playground indefinitely for all future recess needs including but not limited to construction or brick inspection work.
We request the New York City Parks Department to reconsider their decision and adhere to the enhanced protective standards that our communities rely on. The current fence height is not just a physical barrier, but a symbol of our commitment to maintaining a safe haven for our children and residents alike.
Your support is crucial in preserving the safety and security measures that benefit so many. Please sign this petition to keep the fence at its current height, ensuring a safe environment for our children and community. Together, we can make our voices heard and safeguard what is most important to us all.
