Audit the City of Marion before April fiscal plan submission

The Issue

As a concerned resident of Marion, Iowa, I'm reaching out to highlight a critical issue within our city's financial planning. Recently, during the FY27 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) presentation, it came to my attention that the City of Marion has requested a staggering $914,000 for "City Hall Reorganization" (Project FACS-26-002) to be allocated in the current fiscal year. What raises a red flag is that, according to the project description on Page 34, the reorganization “is anticipated to be completed by March 2025.” Yet, the city is planning to allocate nearly $1 million to it now, despite acknowledging that the project should be finished by then.

This discrepancy not only highlights potential mismanagement of public funds but also questions the transparency of our city's financial operations. As a community, we deserve to know exactly how our taxpayer dollars are being spent and to ensure that funds are managed responsibly and ethically. An independent audit of the City of Marion before the submission of their fiscal plan this April could reveal financial missteps, if any, and hold accountable those responsible for such planning disparities.

Financial mismanagement can lead to wasted resources, higher taxes, or budget shortfalls that impact essential city services. We, the residents, have the right to expect integrity and transparency in financial planning from our city officials. By demanding an audit, we can ensure that every dollar is accounted for and that funds are allocated efficiently and effectively.

Let us come together as a community and petition the city for an independent audit before the fiscal plan submission. We need your support to make our voices heard and to hold our city accountable. Please sign the petition to demand a financial audit of the City of Marion to protect our community's resources and trust.
