The Issue

As an Edmontonian watching fellow residents struggle with outrageously high utility rates, I feel compelled to voice our collective frustration with EPCOR's excessive profiteering. Every day, I hear stories from my community of families who are bewildered by the relentless increase in utility costs, a reality that seems increasingly unjust as I observe immense profits being reported by EPCOR. Such staggering profit margins should not coexist with a record number of homes in our city struggling without power.

Consider this: fees that seem unnecessary have been imposed on us, and we've seen a 26% cost hike over an unreasonably short time. This paints a distressing picture of corporate practices that prioritize profits over the well-being of the people they serve. Red flags are raised, yet after reaching out to MLAs, Premier Danielle Smith, and the Utility Commission, I am met with silence.

We must hold EPCOR accountable for these actions that have a direct negative impact on thousands of Edmontonian households. I propose a comprehensive audit of EPCOR to uncover the truth behind these excessive profits. Not only will it bring transparency, but it will also ensure that any excessive profits are rerouted to the residents who have been unduly burdened.

Actionable measures should include the formation of an independent oversight committee to enforce fair utility pricing and the immediate rollback of unnecessary fees. This committee would not only audit finance reports meticulously but also engage openly with Edmonton residents to rebuild lost trust.

We have the right to fair treatment and transparent dealings with our utility providers. It is not merely about the money; it's about justice, fairness, and the right to live without the looming threat of utility disconnection due to unaffordable fees. It is crucial we act now to demand an audit and reclaim agency over what we pay as a community.

Please stand with me in this fight against corporate greed by signing this petition. Together, we can urge our leaders to prioritize the needs of the residents over unchecked corporate profits.
