Auburn City Council fines Salim Mehajer for illegally blocking street in Lidcombe without authorisation
Auburn, NSW: Regarding tonight's Auburn City Council Meeting, we would like to reiterate that the ‘slap on the wrist’ penalty handed to Salim Mehajer was not unexpected given the balance of power and ‘structure’ of Council. Auburn City Council issued Salim Mehajer a $220 fine for illegally blocking an entire street during the course of his wedding.
Under the current NSW local council system Auburn City Council does not have the power to sack councillors therefore it will be up to the Baird government and the Hon Paul Toole MP (Local Government Minister) to take action regarding this matter.
We are relieved to be notified that our representative was able to leave the building without major issue despite a hostile gathering of Mehajer’s supporters. All of the abusive and threatening messages that we have received is in the process of being collated. We have received threats of a potential release of our representative’s personal details and information to the public. Our personal Facebook accounts have also been subjected to attempts of hacking over the past 48 hours.
The ‘Sack Salim Mehajer from Auburn Council’ condemns all unlawful and intimidating behaviour. We would also like to remind elected representatives that one’s conduct before entering political office is just as important as one’s during office. Auburn City Council’s image has unfortunately been tarnished by the actions of Deputy Mayor Salim Mehajer.
As announced in our press release on Monday 17th August 2015, we will not be making any media appearances due to safety concerns.
