AUB e-petition to amend decree nº15 of the Lebanese nationality law

According to decree nº15 of the Lebanese nationality law, issued on January 19th 1925, only Lebanese men are allowed to extend their nationality to their wives and children.

Lebanese women should no longer be denied their natural right to pass on nationality and full citizenship to their children.

Letter to
the Lebanese government & decision makers
We students, faculty and staff of the American University of Beirut, sign this petition to help give women their natural right to pass on their nationality and full citizenship to their children.

According to decree nº15 of the Lebanese nationality law, issued on January 19th 1925, only Lebanese men are allowed to extend their nationality to their wives and children.
Here are some numbers:
More than 77.000 individuals are affected by this law in Lebanon.
More than 41.000 individuals are children of Lebanese mothers who have been denied their right to the Lebanese citizenship.

Now imagine you are the child of a Lebanese mother and a foreign father. You were born in Lebanon, you’ve been living here your entire life, and do not want to and cannot live anywhere else. Except you have to re-register every year as a foreigner, you have problems getting your residency permit, having access to a decent health insurance or social security, and of course getting employed etc. The list goes on; in your heart you are Lebanese, but you are not recognized as such.

It’s about time this changes, and AUB is a good place to start! Help us amend this law, sign this petition, and share it with your friends!
