Appoint an Independent District Attorney in the Rayshard Brooks Case

Appoint an Independent District Attorney in the Rayshard Brooks Case

The Issue

On June 17th, 2020, Fulton County District Attorney, Paul Howard, improperly brought charges against two Atlanta police officers in the shooting death of Rayshard Brooks, which occurred on June 12th, just a few days before DA Howard announced the charges in a press conference. District Attorney Howard filed charges before the Georgia Bureau of Investigation had completed its investigation into the shooting, which was initiated at the request of the Atlanta Police Department. Mr. Howard then put on what amounted to an abbreviated trial in front of the press, in an attempt to taint the jury pool. It is completely improper for a District Attorney to act in such a manner, and it demonstrates that Mr. Howard cannot be a fair prosecutor in this matter. He, along with the Mayor of Atlanta, have convicted the officers involved prior to any trial. The only way this matter can move forward in a fair and impartial manner is for the Attorney General of Georgia, Chris Carr, to appoint an independent district attorney in the case, in similar fashion to what was done in the Ahmed Arbery case. Police officers, just as every other citizen, deserve equal protection under the law.
