A number of Marin County’s most ardent zero waste advocates recently rallied for the Amazon to Reuse Boxes Initiative, driving petition signatures from Marin County residents to over ten thousand.

The Bay Area Sierra Club, Marin Sierra Club, Resilient Neighborhoods, Environmental Forum, and Drawdown Marin all posted the Amazon petition on their Facebook pages prompting huge numbers of residents to respond.

The target of ten thousand signatures successfully demonstrates widespread support by residents for an Amazon Pick up Program in Marin County.

The Amazon to Reuse Boxes petition was launched in February 2019 with four days of signature collection, much in the pouring rain, at Whole Foods Blithedale and the San Rafael Civic Center Farmers Market.

As Ginny Doyle of Belvedere remarked, “This is my very first display of activism - it’s delightful.”

Not only was the response overwhelmingly positive but residents offered ideas - drop off bins at Whole Foods Markets, an Amazon credit for returned boxes, and an online Amazon check out option for a new or used shipping box.

With this feedback, we moved the Amazon petition online in March 2019 and added Amazon plastic mailers, which were creating havoc at recycling plants, to the petition.

Armed today with the support of virtually all Marin County city councils, the Marin County Board of Supervisors, many of the area’s largest businesses, and considerable data on the economic and environmental benefits of an Amazon reuse program, we are ready to approach Amazon.

Stay tuned.
