The Marin Board of Supervisor (BOS), Marin County’s legislative body, has sent a message to Amazon urging it to pick up its packing materials in Marin County.
The Amazon initiative asks Amazon to run a pilot Pick Up Program in which delivery trucks pick up Amazon boxes and plastic mailers on subsequent deliveries and take them back to Amazon warehouses for reuse.
Kate Rice, President of the BOS, states in the letter to Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon, that Marin County has a target goal of zero waste by 2025 that is mirrored in the Climate Action Plans of all cities and towns in Marin County, expressing a deep community-wide commitment to waste reduction.
Rice points out that the volume of Amazon business generated by Marin residents and businesses and the widespread commitment to waste reduction makes Marin County an ideal community for a pilot pick up program.
The Amazon Initiative was started by a handful of Marin residents in 2018 in response to the escalating volume of discarded Amazon boxes, increasing garbage fees, disappointing recycling statistics, and renewed interest in reuse.
In the past year over 8,500 Marin residents have signed the Amazon petition and nine Marin communities have indicated their support, including San Rafael, Mill Valley, San Anselmo, Larkspur, Ross, Belvedere, Fairfax, Novato and Muir Beach.
In addition, large employers in Marin have joined the effort, including College of Marin, Marin Healthcare District (Marin General), Glassdoor, and Mill Valley Refuse.
As our large employer said, “We have two choices right now. We can either burn the boxes or bury the boxes. Neither are good options.”
