The Ross town council voted unanimously to send a letter to Amazon in support of the pilot packaging pickup program in Marin County after much thoughtful discussion.

The Ross council showed keen interest in whether the council had the authority to ask Amazon to act, why Amazon has been selected for a reuse program, and whether promoting reuse over recycling was a change in policy.

Ross Mayor, Elizabeth Brekhus, clarified several of these issues by saying that there are precedents in which the Ross council has acted outside the jurisdiction of Ross on issues that are of concern to the community and that running a pilot pickup program was simply a test that would give the city a “datapoint” from which to make future decisions about waste management.

Amazon is the single largest user of cardboard boxes in the world, a recognized world leader in shipping logistics, an innovator in packaging design for resilience, and currently shipping about fifty percent of all e-commerce orders.

Ross is the ninth community to support the Amazon to Reuse Boxes Initiative, joining Larkspur, Belvedere, Mill Valley, Fairfax, San Rafael, San Anselmo, Novato, and the Muir Beach District.

It also joins the county’s largest employers - College of Marin and the Marin Healthcare District (Marin General).
