Far too long, our elected officials have heard complaints, horror stories and were shown data on a continued issue with particular bars violating the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Specifically, Title II prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, or national origin in places of public accommodations. Recently the owner of 100 Proof & Hedges on Broad, two of the bars in downtown Athens, Ga. that have for years received a consistent flow of negative reviews about racism and underage drinking, was arrested for alleged rape, kidnapping, and sexual assault. We fear this incident could be in line with a culture that has been ignored and perpetuated at these bars for too long. While understanding no action can replace the injuries and injustices many have experienced in these bars, I firmly believe that the good people of Athens-Clarke County have had enough and would like to see these places closed down. Hopefully, in the future, these spaces will house businesses that are welcoming to all and that understands the community is more valuable than a quick buck.
