The new Bear's Lair on the UC Berkeley campus, while beautiful and modern, has been described by students as sterile, boring, and "the Star Wars prequels in bar form."  The long and meaningful history of the Bear's Lair has been lost, and students do not feel that the new campus pub was made for them.  

Notable changes include: 1) the new bar does not offer pitchers of beer, 2) the most cherished tradition of Beat the Clock Fridays has been eliminated.  Both of these items allowed customers to enjoy Bear's Lair with a group, making lifelong friends and building community, on a student budget.

It is clear that this bar was intended for a more privileged group of people - alumni with established income and patrons of Zellerbach Hall.

Please sign this petition to call on the campus and ASUC Student Union Board of Directors to make Bear's Lair more accessible and friendly to students and:

1. Offer beer by the pitcher  [DONE!!!]
2. Bring back Beat the Clock Friday

To be clear, there are serious concerns across the country related to alcohol abuse/misuse on college campuses, including the relationship between alcohol and sexual assault.  UC Berkeley "was established as a public institution and is intrinsically devoted to the health, safety, and well-being of every individual in the campus community."  The concerns are real, and it is understandable why the university would not like to promote binge drinking, or to risk any of the negative consequences of alcohol misuse befalling their students.  However, we feel that the campus has an opportunity with the Bear's Lair to provide a safe environment where students can learn how to enjoy alcohol responsibly.  If Bear's Lair offers a fun and affordable experience, students can use their knowledge from the AlcoholEDU program to enjoy alcoholic beverages in a controlled and safe environment.  If the Bear's Lair remains in its current state, the alternative is for students to learn how to drink at house parties or local bars which the university has no influence over.
