The Issue

Our community on the west of South New Columbus Road faces an imminent threat due to a housing development plan by the City of Anderson, Indiana. This development will drastically alter the natural landscape that directs stormwater runoff to Sugar Fork Creek. Many of us, over 100 households, rely on wells, septic systems, and crawl spaces, all of which could be severely affected by this plan.

The Sugar Fork Creek basin has a naturally sloping decline of 20 feet, which facilitates the natural flow of stormwater. The planned housing development intends to move vast amounts of earth without accommodating the critical stormwater drainage from the Ballard Norris watershed. This oversight puts our homes and way of life at risk. The development's real estate business is owned by a local politician, who was made aware of this stormwater issue years ago, before proposing this development to the city.

Without a proper stormwater management plan, the possibility of flooding and associated problems might rise dramatically. Flooded wells and compromised septic systems could lead to serious sanitation and health issues, not to mention the potential financial burden we might face when trying to safeguard our properties.

We demand that the development plan include a comprehensive strategy to ensure unimpeded stormwater runoff to Sugar Fork Creek. This should involve not only the proposed housing area but the wider impacts on the surrounding neighborhoods as well.

Let's stand together to protect our homes and natural environment from irresponsible development. Sign this petition to urge the City of Anderson to adopt an environmentally sensitive and sustainable plan for our area. The next public meeting is January 27, 2026 @ 4:30pm according to planning officials. This petition will be presented at that time.
