Demand the Associate Press Stylebook recognize PhDs with the title Dr.
The Issue
The Associated Press Stylebook sets the standard of not recognizing the earned doctorate of philosophy degree holders with the title "doctor". NPR and many other news organizations follow this misguided standard. Since the AP Stylebook sets the standard for many journalists and standardized mass communication, it is ideally situated to remediate this practice of denying PhD holders their earned title.
Recently, Dec. 14, 2020, an opinion piece called on Dr. Jill Biden to stop using the title doctor despite holding an earned doctorate in education. It is past time news organization recognized those with earned doctorates of philosophy with their appropriate title and abandoned the insulting practice of only recognizing holders of medical degrees as doctors.
Associated Press, change your Stylebook. NPR, whether or not AP does the right thing, change your policy and announce the change publicly.
