The Issue

In Peckham, our soup kitchen serves as a beacon of hope for over 350 individuals each week. It came to our existence out of the dire need to combat hunger and deprivation in our community, we tirelessly strive to provide our less fortunate neighbors with warm, nutritious meals, groceries and essetials so that they do not have to choose the ultimatum between food and essentials. However, we now face an urgent and pressing concern, our existing premises are no longer available and we desperately need to find a new home.

In the UK, nearly 8.4 million people are struggling to afford to eat, according to the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation. This means PSK is more than just a place to eat. It's a sanctuary where our community members can find mutual support, encouragement, and basic human fellowship that far exceeds the nutritional requirement.

We serve over 350 meals weekly, distribute around 400 food parcels, and provide groceries and clothing to local residents. In addition, we run various free programmes throughout the year, including youth activities such as football camps, trial opportunities for clubs, boxing and fitness sessions, as well as a community allotment programme teaching people to grow and harvest their own food.

While we have been actively searching for new premises, the high property prices in Peckham pose a significant challenge. Therefore, we are calling for the local government and council, generous property owners, and community members to aid us in this mission. Southwark news recently spoke with Southwark council regarding assiting us in staying open for Southwark community members and they stated,

“The council does not currently have any suitable properties available around Rye Lane that they could look into. “We are continuing to work proactively with local organisations in Peckham to meet the needs of our most vulnerable residents and we wish Peckham Soup Kitchen every success in finding a suitable premises.” - John batteson

Our services rely heavily on donations and funding, which means we cannot afford rental prices without compromising the support we provide to the community.

We urge everyone reading this to join us in supporting Peckham Soup Kitchen. This is not just about securing a new location—it is about ensuring the survivability of a service that offers so much more than just a meal. Please, sign this petition to show that you stand with Peckham Soup Kitchen and the people we serve.
