The Issue

To the Games Workshop’s Design Team,

I am writing to you today to politely request that you alter your current approach to the Warhammer 40k faction of Imperial Agents, to provide clarity and respect to your customers who have purchased Imperial Agents products under the impression that the army would be supported as a fully playable faction.

On the 22nd of August, 2024, Games Workshop launched the Imperial Agents faction with an article explaining how to collect and play the army. The article details how to play Imperial Agents as a fully realized faction, and encourages customers to buy the models under this assumption.

Since then, it strongly appears as if Games Workshop has chosen to discontinue their support of the faction, although they have never explicitly stated this. Examples include:

  • Almost never including any point changes for Imperial Agents in the Quarterly Balance updates, based on Agents’ competitive performance
  • Failing to include a Faction Focus article on Imperial Agents during the series to preview 11th edition, and a failure to include any new Detachments at launch, unlike every other faction
  • No new Detachments added since the 2025 Grotmas detachments, whereas other armies have received multiple
  • Assigning all of the Imperial Agents’ detachments 3 Detachment Points in the launch of the rules for 11th edition, meaning that the army is literally unplayable in Incursion sized games with their 2dp limit

Despite this, there have been small indications that Games Workshop does intend to continue supporting the faction, such as:

  • The addition of new units to the range, such as the Sanctifiers, Aquila Kill team, and Inquisitor Kroyle
  • The production of a new Deathwatch box with Imperial Agents branding
  • Printing an entry for Imperial Agents in the 11th edition launch lore book alongside other fully supported factions

This has led to confusion among the player community about whether their army will continue to be supported, and feelings of abandonment by the company when they don’t receive the same level of updates and care that every other faction enjoys.

Imperial Agents are, admittedly, the least played faction of the game, based on reports of player populations in Grand Tournaments. However, the faction has had occasional successes in competitive play, such as a top 4 finish at Adepticon. If the faction was to receive the same competitive balancing and company support as the game’s other factions, it could enjoy an explosion of players, and the corresponding sales of models.

There are multiple Imperial Agents based tie-ins on the horizon in Games Workshop’s portfolio as well. Owlcat is soon to release their Dark Heresy CRPG to follow up their successful Rogue Trader CRPG, the new Chaos Gate game will be featuring Deathwatch, and Games Workshop just released a new Eisenhorn Omnibus. It stands to reason that these properties would boost the popularity of their matching faction, and vice versa.

We are therefore asking that Games Workshop clarify its intentions for the Imperial Agents faction, and either commit to supporting the army at the same level as the game’s other factions, or issuing notice that the faction is planned to be “squatted” and that customers should no longer continue buying products for a faction that will not continue to exist.

Thank you for your attention,
