Smithsonian: Identify Pigeon War Hero as Female
The Issue
Chère Amie was a messenger pigeon who took a bullet to save the lives of almost 200 U.S. armed forces during WWI. She was assumed to be male, but according to Army records, the truth was revealed during taxidermy. (It's notoriously difficult to identify the sex of live pigeons.) The Smithsonian continues to identify Chère Amie as a male. Isn't it time for an update? This October will be the 100th anniversary of her flight. What better way to honor her service than by recognizing Chère Amie for who she was: a Pigeon Heroine!
