Ask the Secretary of State for Transport to pause Route E at Bedford

The Issue

Please consider and consult on a southern route option.

In my opinion Route E is set to become one of the most destructive and expensive projects in Bedford. It threatens to disrupt the daily life of our community and alter our town's landscape in ways that cannot be easily reversed.

One of the most alarming concerns is the impact on Bedford town's transport system, which is expected to face severe gridlock. This comes as a result of major infrastructural changes without considering the best interests of the town's residents and businesses.

A significant issue with Route E is the proposed demolition along Ashburnham Road, where homes and businesses, including a crucial doctor's surgery, face the threat of being destroyed merely for building convenience. Such destruction is unnecessary and would remove valuable community resources and homes.

Furthermore, Fairhill roundabout/Clapham area is at risk of becoming a new eyesore due to the imposing structures planned there, damaging both the aesthetic and the allure of our community's landscape.

There's also chaos looming for hospital parking facilities, which are crucial for both hospital staff and visitors. The proposed changes do not appear to adequately address the interim building and parking provision, leading to potential increased stress and inconvenience for everyone needing access.

In Queens Park, the suggested multi-storey car park has not been welcomed by the community. It stands as another point of contention that's causing distress among residents who feel their voices are not being heard.

I urge you to join me in asking that the government, specifically the Secretary of State for Transport, pauses Route E for Bedford and that they instead give real consideration to a southern route option, which presents a less disruptive and more harmonious solution for Bedford's development.

Please sign this petition to advocate for a route that supports Bedford’s future and a community-focused approach to transport planning. Bedford is a market town with much history and deserves development that respects both its people and the environment.
