Ask the Oxford Dictionary: Change the Definition of Rape
Ask the Oxford Dictionary: Change the Definition of Rape
The Issue
According to the Oxford English dictionary Mac App, the definition of rape is: “the crime, committed by a man, of forcing another person to have sexual intercourse with him without their consent and against their will, esp. by the threat or use of violence against them.”
By this definition, only a man is capable of committing rape. This assumption is not only incorrect, but it's offensive, and it perpetuates false notions that ultimately harm everyone.
The myth that only men can rape is based on the ideas that men always want sex, that men are always stronger than women and able to physically control women, and that lesbian sex isn't as valid as sex involving a man.
Ignoring the possibility that women can rape silences men who are raped, causing shame and embarrassment.
Ask the Oxford dictionary to change their definition of rape to any non-consentual sex, regardless of gender. This definition is based on archaic stereotypes, not on reality.
