Immediately relocate toxic Waste-to-Energy plant illegally built 100 metres away from the DDA colony of Sukhdev Vihar.
The Issue
Send a message to Shri Satyendra Jain, Delhi’s minister for health and industry, asking for the immediate relocation of a toxic Waste-to-Energy plant illegally built 100 metres away from the DDA colony of Sukhdev Vihar.
This Jindal plant burns unsegregated waste and emits a cocktail of toxic substance including dioxins that have been proven (WHO) to cause genetic defects in newborns, interfere with hormones, adversely affect immune systems and cause cancer. Residents of Sukhdev Vihar and nearby colonies wake up to lethal doses of dioxins and other toxic substances from the burning of 2,000 tonnes of waste daily.
As a “Red” category” industry the plant cannot operate within NCR. Besides it uses outdated Chinese technology and equipment that do not conform to Indian laws. The plant is located on a green belt in the eco-sensitive zone of the Okhla Bird Sanctuary and within one kilometre of the Holy Family and Fortis-Escorts Hospitals that treat critically ill patients. Its emissions affect the Jamia Millia Islamia University and several other educational and research institutions. Toxic ash from the plant has often fallen on the Okhla Subzi Mandi, contaminating fruits and vegetables.
In spite of these serious locational and technological violations, the plant is being promoted as a model for waste management. At a time when Delhi’s citizens are suffocating under excessive vehicular and other pollution the plant add to the already grave public health hazards in the national capital.
The future of the Delhi air and lakhs of residents some of whom are yet to be born, is in your hands. Please sign this petition and help all of us do this right.
