Ask the City of Elk Grove to hire a second shelter veterinarian

Ask the City of Elk Grove to hire a second shelter veterinarian
The Issue
The Elk Grove Animal Shelter has been a great community resource since it opened its doors in 2019. However, only one veterinarian has been managing the care and treatment of Elk Grove animals. Just last year there were over two thousand animals taken in by Elk Grove Animal Shelter. A high number of animals to one veterinarian requires some necessary medical procedures to be abandoned or denied. Currently Elk Grove Animal Shelter does not have a veterinarian available on the weekend. Without a weekend veterinarian, community members have missed critical services, such as their TNR program. An additional veterinarian and veterinary technicians would be able to offer more services for our community's animals.
- Over 20,000 community cats in Elk Grove.
- Nearly 80% of kittens in shelters came from a feral cat.
- Elk Grove Animal Services offers two surgeries a week per household.
- TNR clinic closed three separate days in July 2023 - 26 potential surgeries
- Nearly twice as many animals entered the shelter July 2023 compared to July 2022.
- Community is paying out-of-pocket for veterinary care for unowned community cats when the shelter cannot provide adequate medical care.
- Only one in-house veterinarian cannot care for all sick and injured animals in Elk Grove.
