The Issue

Lift at Plaistow Underground Station

Background

Plaistow Underground Station, served by the District and Hammersmith & City lines, is a vital transport link for thousands of commuters, residents, and visitors each day. However, the station currently has no step-free access, which severely restricts accessibility for passengers with mobility impairments, older people, parents with prams, and those carrying heavy luggage.

As London works towards creating a more inclusive and accessible transport system, Plaistow remains a notable gap in step-free coverage across East London.

Why Plaistow Needs a Lift

1. Accessibility for All

Step-free access is a necessity, not a luxury. Without a lift, passengers with reduced mobility are effectively excluded from using Plaistow Station.

The Equality Act 2010 places a duty on public services to make reasonable adjustments to ensure accessibility.

2. Meeting Local Demand

Plaistow is undergoing regeneration, with new housing developments and an expanding community. Improved accessibility will directly benefit residents and encourage more visitors.

Local schools, health services, and community centres depend on accessible transport links for pupils, patients, and staff.

3. Supporting Families and Older Residents

Parents with prams face significant barriers at Plaistow.

Older residents and those with hidden disabilities also benefit greatly from lifts.

4. Improving Connectivity in East London

Step-free access at Plaistow would strengthen east–west travel for passengers using both the District and Hammersmith & City lines.

It would also improve links to Stratford, a key hub for employment, healthcare, and leisure.

Heritage Status

Plaistow Station is a Grade II listed building, and its historic character must rightly be respected. However, listing status should not be seen as a barrier to accessibility. Other listed stations across London — including Finsbury Park, Ealing Broadway and Greenford — have successfully integrated lifts without compromising their heritage.

We believe that with sensitive design and proper consultation, Plaistow can and must follow suit, ensuring both its history and its future serve the whole community.

What We Are Calling For

We respectfully ask Transport for London to:

1. Prioritise the installation of lifts at Plaistow Station as part of its Step-Free Access programme.

2. Publish a feasibility study and a clear timeline for delivery.

3. Consult meaningfully with t

he local community to ensure their needs are fully considered.
