The Issue

Shopping is a daily necessity, a time when we should feel safe and free to browse and purchase items for our homes and families. I have always loved shopping at Publix in Miami — their pleasant customer service and quality products have been a staple in our community. But recently my visits have been overshadowed by the dread of seeing individuals openly carrying firearms.

The open carry of guns in a public space like a supermarket creates an environment of fear and anxiety among customers and employees. Many of us enter these stores with our families, friends, and children, hoping to enjoy a stress-free shopping experience. Instead, we find ourselves becoming hyper-aware of our surroundings, worried about potential dangers. No one should have to fear for their safety while picking out groceries.

It is well-documented that open carry can escalate into violence. According to a report by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the presence of firearms in public areas significantly increases the potential for accidental discharges or motivated shootings. This is especially troubling in places like supermarkets, where aisles are filled with families and children. The potential consequences are dire and very real.

Publix prides itself on being a community-focused business, often touting their slogan, "Where shopping is a pleasure." However, allowing open carry stands in stark contrast to this promise, potentially transforming pleasure into panic. Whereas some states have more permissive gun laws, businesses have the discretion to enforce policies that protect both their revenue and their reputation by prioritizing customer and employee safety.

We are not asking Publix to enter the larger political debate about gun rights. Instead, we urge them to take a responsible stance within their stores by prohibiting open carry. By doing so, Publix would be joining a number of respected national chains that have prioritized safety, setting a standard in our Miami community, which is known for its diversity and inclusion.

Until Publix reconsiders their policy, many of us will find it necessary to shop elsewhere. We hope they realize that the safety and comfort of their customers and staff should be paramount. Shopping should not be met with fear but rather, as their slogan goes, should be a genuine pleasure.

Please join me in petitioning Publix to ban open carry in their stores. Sign this petition and help make our shopping spaces safer for everyone.
