The Issue
As a retired nurse, I find myself in a unique position that underscores the need for a fair adjustment to the union dues policy within the Ontario Nurses' Association (ONA). With decades of service behind me and a lifelong commitment to the nursing profession, I now choose to work only one to two shifts a month. Despite this significantly reduced workload, I am still required to pay a hefty $125.00 in union dues each month. This policy seems disproportionately burdensome for nurses like me, who are either retired or working in a casual capacity.
The current dues structure does not adequately reflect the economic realities faced by those who are no longer working full time or are transitioning out of full-time employment. It is crucial to acknowledge that many retired and casual nurses continue to contribute valuable services within the healthcare system yet often operate under financial constraints. The high cost of dues may even deter some retired nurses from maintaining or taking up casual work, thereby leading to a loss of experienced professionals in our healthcare facilities.
We recognize the importance of union representation to safeguard our rights and ensure fair working conditions. However, the system must be equitable and considerate of the varying financial capabilities of its members. ONA should adopt a dues structure that takes into account the number of shifts worked or the income earned by its members. For instance, implementing a prorated dues system or offering reduced rates for those with limited work hours could be a viable and fair solution.
According to Statistics Canada, the number of retirees is steadily increasing, with a significant portion remaining engaged in the workforce part-time due to financial needs or a passion for their profession. With our aging population and a growing demand for healthcare services, it is more important than ever to support and retain skilled nursing professionals, even in a casual capacity.
We urge the Ontario Nurses' Association to revise its constitution, acknowledging the necessity for a more flexible and equitable approach to union dues. This change will not only benefit retired and casual nurses but also strengthen the profession as a whole by ensuring that experienced nurses remain a vital part of our healthcare system.
Please join me in calling for a fair change to the union dues policy by signing this petition. Together, we can strive towards a more just system for all nurses.
