The Issue

In the early hours of Tuesday, 7 April, tragedy struck the Birkdale area when a man was bitten by a dog, resulting in injuries to his stomach and arm. Thankfully, he is currently receiving treatment in the hospital and is not believed to be seriously injured. Another individual, a man in his 70s, was reportedly not injured. In response to the incident, armed police officers were deployed on Lynton Road, and a decision was made to destroy one of the dogs at the scene by shooting him or her. This approach was perceived as harsh and unnecessary by many, including myself.  Please complain via this form.

In contrast, Toronto and many other Canadian cities have developed humane and effective procedures for managing such incidents. Instead of resorting to lethal force, they implement penalties on the owners and introduce regulations to ensure that the public remains safe without unjustly punishing the dogs. Minor injuries, like those sustained in this incident, should not warrant such a drastic measure as euthanasia.  (Shooting should never be regarded as a humane form of euthanasia).

This incident has highlighted a concerning protocol where dogs are shot instead of exploring alternative measures. The presence of specialist dog officers should ensure that all parties, human and canine, are treated fairly and with respect. In light of this, I urge authorities to adopt a more compassionate approach similar to those practiced in other parts of the world.

We need new legislations that protect both public safety and the welfare of animals. Laws should be revised to implement stringent owner responsibilities, enforce effective management when dogs are involved in incidents, and prioritize non-lethal methods.

Sign this petition to call for an end to the killing of dogs after minor incidents and to urge a review of current protocols. Let's advocate for a more balanced and humane approach, ensuring public safety without the loss of innocent lives. Your support will contribute to creating a compassionate, sensible, and effective solution for everyone involved. Please sign and share this petition to make a difference.
