Ask Indiana State Police to endorse motorcycle lane filtering

Ask Indiana State Police to endorse motorcycle lane filtering
The Issue
Motorcycle lane filtering saves lives. By allowing riders to safely move between slow or stopped cars, it reduces rear-end collisions, keeps motorcyclists out of blind spots, and lowers the risk of heat-related injuries in heavy traffic. Filtering also helps all drivers by easing congestion and improving traffic flow.
A UC Berkeley / California study found that lane-splitting/filtering riders are less than half as likely to be rear-ended compared with riders who stay in their lane (about 2.6% vs. 4.6%). Rider Magazine+2SMARTER+2
In California, only ~0.4% to 0.6% of motorcycle crashes involved lane-splitting, even though splitting is common in heavy, slow traffic. SMARTER+1
States like California and Utah have already embraced lane filtering after clear evidence of safety benefits. California saw a significant drop in rear-end crashes and motorcyclist fatalities after legalizing the practice in 2017. Countries across Europe and Asia have recognized for decades that letting riders filter forward prevents accidents and keeps roads moving.
Yet Indiana continues to leave riders exposed, forcing them to remain stationary in dangerous stop-and-go conditions. Every day, Hoosier riders face unnecessary risk while safer, proven solutions are ignored.
We call on the Indiana State Police and state legislators to publicly recognize the safety advantages of motorcycle lane filtering, begin statewide education campaigns, and support legislation to legalize this life-saving practice.
Safer roads benefit everyone—motorcyclists, motorists, and families who share Indiana’s highways. Sign this petition to urge Indiana leaders to protect riders, reduce accidents, and bring our traffic laws in line with proven best practices.
