The Issue

If not issued in the next few weeks, we face yet another costly delay.  This project was supposed to start in 2022, then 2024, then this spring.  Meanwhile, this critical link between Belmont and Charlotte along Wilkinson Blvd (US 74) is the scene of massive traffic tie-ups (US 74) that contribute to significant productivity losses every day for countless residents who rely on this route for their livelihoods. Not only is the old bridge cramped and dangerous, but the constant idling leads to increased air pollution, deteriorating the air quality in our region, and making travel perilous and stressful.

North Carolina Department of Transportation's (NCDOT) project B-6051, a fully designed and funded bridge replacement plan intended to alleviate these issues.  WHAT'S THE DELAY?  Duke Energy owns some of the property needed for the project, and they have so far withheld permission.  That's also why FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) is involved. This stalling not only prolongs the community's daily struggles but also hampers economic growth and exacerbates environmental damage.

By allowing the delays to persist, FERC and Duke Energy are putting the wellbeing of thousands of commuters in jeopardy. It's essential for these bodies to prioritize community needs and collaborate to expedite the replacement of this bridge. The new infrastructure will significantly ease traffic flow, enhance road safety, reduce carbon emissions, and boost local economy.

We urge FERC and Duke Energy to recognize the urgency of this bridge replacement and to take immediate action. Please stop delaying the B-6051 project so that our communities can enjoy safer, faster, and cleaner commutes.

Sign this petition to demand that FERC and Duke Energy halt the delays and allow for the completion of the bridge replacement that our communities desperately need.

You can also call Duke Energy's Lake Services, they own Lake Wylie!  Ask them what's the holdup on the necessary approvals. 800-443-5193.
