The Issue

We should not destroy these glorious, food-giving trees. With the recent bankruptcy of DelMonte Foods, approximately 420,000 peach trees in California face the grim prospect of being bulldozed. These trees, located on fertile agricultural lands, are not only a vital source of delicious peaches but also an essential part of our state's rich agricultural heritage and economy.

The loss of these trees would mean the loss of plentiful resources that contribute to our community's food supply. Beyond their importance in providing nourishment, these trees represent hundreds of jobs and serve as a foundation for the family farms and workers who depend on them. By preserving these trees, we can continue to offer fresh, locally-grown peaches to countless families and sustain the livelihoods of many California workers.

Furthermore, the environmental benefit of these trees cannot be overlooked. Mature peach trees absorb carbon dioxide, produce oxygen, and provide habitat for wildlife. Destroying them would not only create a gap in our ecological balance but also contribute to unnecessary carbon emissions and waste.

We propose that the State of California explore options such as finding investors or organizations willing to maintain and harvest these trees or collaborating with farmers who could integrate them into their current operations. With innovation and dedicated support from the government, we can prevent this agricultural catastrophe.

We urge Governor Gavin Newsom and other relevant officials to take immediate action to protect these peach trees and to consider them an investment in our state's agricultural future. By signing this petition, you join thousands of others in a movement to save a vital piece of California's agricultural landscape. Let us work together to preserve our natural resources and ensure a fruitful future for generations to come.

Please sign this petition to encourage swift action to save the 420,000 peach trees at risk.
