We want a traditional school calendar year that the majority of the USA adopts, starting school after Labor Day & ending in June. As the US education is increasingly challenged with low performances & slipping standards why is the district making it harder for kids to succeed in school? The current schedule, starting school during THE hottest time of the year, in no way optimizes the time students are in school learning. August is the hottest month of the summer & August 2011 we experienced the highest temperatures in decades. We know this is a trend. High summer temperatures in school lead to poor concentration & focus. The classrooms are sweltering! The cost of energy to keep schools cool enough for students to stay focused & concentrate is cost prohbitive. With budget cuts, it's even more challenging. This last May, we had brisk, stormy weather through the beginning of June. This is also a consistent trend. Students do not need to be released from school in May, before Memorial Day, a full month before summer officially starts. Can we please have our summers back?! Summer starts in June, not May. It is better for student’s summers. It is better for families. Every one we talked to in the district, including staff, teachers, parent & students do not like this schedule. We need to give our children & teachers the best chance for success in the classrooms and schools. We need to utilize every tool we can to help our education system. August is too hot to be in school. May is too cool to be on summer break.
