I wanted to share a detailed update regarding the petition for a new playground or outdoor gym at JRMS.
I was informed that The Board of Education discussed the petition at a fall board meeting. Following that discussion, Dr. McKinnon and Ms. Desmarais met with JRMS students to gather additional feedback about the current recess space and what may be lacking.
Based on student input, the Board determined that certain targeted updates would best meet student needs at this time. These reportedly include additions such as new sports equipment (for example, a volleyball net) and new seating areas. Final details are expected to be confirmed after February break.
While the Board and Facilities Committee did discuss the request for a new playground or outdoor gym, they have chosen to move forward with these more limited updates instead. Additionally, approximately $50,000 has been allocated toward improvements to the Project Adventure space. This funding is still subject to Board of Finance approval and a town referendum vote in May.
We truly appreciate that student feedback was considered. At the same time, as parents, we know that middle school students may not always fully recognize what would most benefit them long-term in terms of physical activity, social development, and structured outdoor engagement. Parent voices remain important in this conversation.
Thank you to everyone who signed and supported the petition. Your engagement brought this issue to the table. I encourage everyone to stay informed, review the board discussion if you haven’t already, and continue respectfully advocating for what we believe will best support our children.
I will continue to share updates as they become available. Please feel free to reach out if you would like the link to the board meeting discussion.
