The Issue

Growing up an avid reader, I always dreamed of meeting the authors whose stories transported me to fantastical worlds and unforgettable adventures. However, like many of my friends, I have often found this dream to be out of reach—the logistics and expense of traveling to large conventions or book signings often make it impossible. Authors like Shannon Messenger, whose works have inspired and enchanted thousands of young readers, seem forever out of reach for those of us in Arlington.

Young Adult (YA) literature is more than just entertainment; it's a means of escape, education, and forming connections for many teenagers. Authors such as Shannon Messenger, and popular international YA writers, have touched lives with their compelling narratives and diverse characters. These authors deserve to be accessible to readers of all backgrounds, but the gap in resources often leaves aspiring young readers disconnected from their literary idols.

By inviting Shannon Messenger and other international or popular YA authors, Arlington Public Library can bridge this gap. We understand that arranging author visits requires resources and planning, but it's a worthy investment that promotes literacy and inspires our youth. Libraries are cornerstones of our community, providing access to knowledge and creativity. Having authors visit would enhance not only the cultural landscape of Arlington but also nurture a new generation of readers and writers.

Libraries in cities across the globe regularly host author events, which are highly successful and accessible to all. Boston and San Francisco have seen great success in bringing hit YA authors into their public libraries, creating enriching conversations and inspirational moments for their youth. Why not Arlington?

By rallying for support, we can encourage the Arlington Public Library to prioritize hosting events for popular international authors. Such initiatives would also reflect the library's commitment to diversification and expanding horizons for its patrons.

Join me and others in signing this petition. Let's show Arlington Public Library there is a strong community of readers who would love to meet their literary heroes. Together, we can transform this dream into reality. Please sign and make a difference today.
