COVID cases in the Rogue Valley continue to spike, and vaccinations remain the strongest form of protection against the virus. The Ashland School District’s failure to implement a vaccine mandate for all eligible students has left the community as a whole at greater risk of infection.

Masks and social distancing, on their own, are not enough to ensure the safety of staff, students, and the rest of the public. In fact, an individual tested positive after only a single day at the high school’s Fresh Start retreat for new students, where masking and distancing were enforced, but vaccines were not required. The addition level of protection provided by mandatory vaccinations would create a safer environment for everyone.

The precedence for such mandates has been demonstrated by the LA Unified School District, the second largest in the nation, which recently required that all students receive a COVID-19 vaccination or return to remote learning. Furthermore, there are currently zero ICU beds available at Asante in Ashland; a vaccine mandate already in place for district staff; and only sporadic enforcement of masking and distancing policies taking place on campus. These non-uniform policies leave the community exposed to greater risk and inhibit the ability of students to feel comfortable at school.

The primary purpose of the district board is to create a safe and equitable learning environment for all students, and the current inaction demonstrates a failure to realize that goal. The time is now for the district to require vaccines for all eligible students.
