Make a potential life-saving decision for Ashby de la Zouch with an AED
The Issue
We have noticed that many towns, cities and establishments are having a new piece of life saving equipment installed called an Automatic External Defribrilator or AED for short.
With the use of an AED, the chance of a person surviving following a cardiac arrhythmia or arrest is significant over traditional CPR methods. Uncorrected, these cardiac conditions (ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation, asystole) rapidly lead to irreversible brain damage and death, once cardiac arrest takes place. After approximately three to five minutes in cardiac arrest, irreversible brain/tissue damage may begin to occur. For every minute that a person in cardiac arrest goes without being successfully treated (by defibrillation), the chance of survival decreases by 7 percent per minute in the first 3 minutes, and decreases by 10 percent per minute as time advances beyond ~3 minutes
No additional training is required to use an AED as they are all automatic with voice prompts. They also have safety features built in so that only a patient suffering a cardiac arrest actually receives the right treatment they need, as opposed to someone who simply has a weak pulse.
We requesting this petition to take place following our recent First Aid at Work training, and we feel strongly that the implementation of an AED device would one day save a life (or even many in years to come), and that it should be strongly put to consideration by the town council and district councils.
How would you feel knowing that a close friend or family member has passed away due to unsuccessful CPR, which could have easily been averted with the use of an AED?
An AED can be securely stored in an easily accessible but secure location on Market Street and requires minimal maintenance. The initial cost of the equipment isn't particularly cheap, but once acquired, it costs very little each year to maintain. This is something we would personally look to control if required.
