Laws for animal cruelty in Aruba

The Issue

To: Aruba Government

Every signature counts! Don't underestimate the power of an online petition. Join in our effort: your signature can give a voice to animals. The aim of this campaign is make sure that Aruba gets a law against animal cruelty that is actually enforced.

Aruba reality is increasingly being exposed to tourists and locals, it's been years since we've been asking (begging) for laws against animal cruelty, and absolutely nothing has been done or empty promises. Not only are certain locals nuts, but visitors around the world who visited or were planning to visit are joining forces all over the world to make a difference. In many local cases or reports, the police can do nothing about them, as they say, "there are no laws against animal cruelty".

"Aruba a war zone for the unwanted babies born on the streets to be beaten, poisoned, run over, kicked, thrown in the trash, put into dog fights as bait, tossed out of moving cars while driving with children teaching them it’s ok to abuse they will grow up and do the same! thrown carelessly into the Kill cage to be slaughtered. This is the “Happy Island” where all the wealthy tourists going to spend millions of dollars on their luxurious vacations! Not knowing the truth behind what is really going on. We believe if they knew they would really be angry. We need help the promises made months ago were actually a huge relief. We truly believed that finally after decades of suffering and killing that changes were going to be made. Sadly nothing but a nice paint job for the kill cage and they now have hours of operation. New rescues coming in daily it’s a never-ending line of puppies and kitties hurt, sick, bleeding, covered in fleas, ticks, lice, bellies loaded with worms, cactus thorns stuck through their bodies it’s a disgrace A THIRD WORLD SICK COUNTRY WITH ABUSERS EVERYWHERE! FYI Not spaying and neutering and letting the puppies and mommies starve to death before your eyes is also Abuse."

"Shame on some people. If you can’t take care of an animal, don’t get one!  Evelyn Wever-Croes, Minister President where is the enforcement of the anti animal cruelty laws that were rolled out in July?"

"Evelyn Wever-Croes why is that horrific kill cage still opened? I thought you announced a plan to close that disgusting place?"

#3
"I hope you don't have pets in your family. You are such a 2 face politician with no heart and most of us tourists can't stand your worthless promises about helping your Aruba animals in the kill cage or your promises and going to make it worldwide of the non existence care of your animals on your island and you are considered a third world country our eyes in the US!"

#4
"What happened to your promise to close the kill cage???? This dog was lucky - a rescue volunteer happened to pass the kill cage as he was being dumped there by a resident of Aruba for "pooping on the floor" Sickening !"

#5
"I don’t understand why policies aren’t in place to take care of the neglected animals! It’s horrible and all of the people visiting and spending money on your island see it! I guess when people choose other vacation options it will sink in that this is an awful problem that needs to be addressed. It’s just so sad."

#6
"I am in agreement with other who DO NOT like your policy on dogs. Please pass something to make spaying and neutering mandatory and taking better care of your animals in your country."

"Dear Madam President, I am a time-share owner and I visit your beautiful country several times a year. While I feel honored to be allowed to share the beauty of Aruba there is one thing that pains me and it is the plight of your street dogs. There are foundations which have been set up by local people (such as New Life for Paws and ARF) and they are doing so much to alleviate the pain and suffering of these helpless animals but legislation is needed to make it illegal to mistreat or neglect any animal, to negate the use of Kill-cages and to establish a humane spay-programme. Please make this a priority of your service to your country - if for no other reason than it is often a key factor in travel and vacation decisions for worldwide travellers. With hope, Susie Norman"

"Aruba is/was my first choice for a vacation destination but I’m reconsidering due to abusive policies regarding animal welfare. Please consider alternatives to the kill cage or I’ll be forced to go elsewhere. Trust me, I’m not alone in this sentiment. It wouldn’t be difficult to rally US tourists to this cause in support of positive change or negatively by taking our business elsewhere."

#9
"I am a 15 year visitor of your island and my heart is broken to see such devastating posts such as these. Please do something to bring change"

#10
"Dear Prime Minister, when is your policy to protect the animals of Aruba being implemented? It seems every time the organizations, volunteers, and supporters put you on the spot you release a statement stating your concern and appreciation for the work we do. You even welcome more people to join the cause, but WHAT ARE YOU DOING? Where is the spay/neuter campaign? Why is the KILLCAGE STILL OPEN? We are done with your political statements and lack of action! SHAME ON YOU!"

#11
"If this photo doesn’t speak words I don’t know what will. Please, I’m begging you to support the animal foundations of Aruba. Every animal has a right to life just as a human does. It breaks my heart to see how the people of Aruba abuse these animals (poison, shoot, throw them out of moving vehicles and even kill them without receiving any type of punishment for these barbaric acts. Please step up and make a difference TODAY!!!"

"What a disgrace that the Prime Minister is not responding to the Aurbian animal loving people, the concerned tourists, timeshare owners like myself and at least say something about the barbaric ways you let the animals die a brutal death and make no remorse or answer our pleas or try to come up with solutions to easily solve the over population of such a small island , more of the tourists are not coming back to visit like me till you do something and you have the power and apparently do nothing, as a woman and as a mother, what a horrible example to be just a cold heartless , let's just keep it at that for now!"

"A strong and beautiful women making a difference. You must be proud of your achievements and you should be. However, you have the power and authority to do something to change the way cats and dogs are cared for on my favorite Island. The tourists will assemble and bring negative attention to this issue. We are getting angrier. Build a shelter. Stop the government “ vet “ service from illegally and inhumanly killing innocent animals. Charge a license fee for any animal not spayed/ neutered. Fines can be given to owners who let their pets run the streets. So much can be done to change the perception of the ugliness of this issue. ~Linda from Canada"

My husband and I have traveled to Aruba many times, it’s our favorite place to go. In fact, we recently purchased a full ownership condo on the island. In July, we took 22 people to the island for a celebration, and all of them loved it! HOWEVER...every one said they won’t go back...not until YOU, the government, put some laws into place to protect, spay, and neuter the animals. It was heartbreaking for all of our guests, even though they all know what we do to help..& worse, it was beyond even what they have seen in third world countries where poverty is extreme. We, as tourists, contribute our time, money, and supplies to help the animals, but our efforts are wasted until someone in your government steps up and realizes this is a problem. A big one. I’ve seen NO LESS than 15 Facebook posts from tourists, in the last week, about the homelessness and cruelty to animals on the island. All vowing never to put another dollar (or florin) into your economy, until you put laws into place regarding animals. You focus all your time and energy on other “bigger” problems on the island, all while ignoring the one big problem that will, given enough time, kill tourism to the island. I understand you have a government to run....but, as now owners of a potential rental property on the island, I NEED you to understand that you WILL LOSE tourists...at a growing rate every year...until you help these animals. When that happens, you can forget about all the “other” issues on the island, because tourism is the lifeblood of Aruba and we all know it...so once tourism tanks, the island will be doomed anyway. Just my opinion...but I’m not alone in this opinion. At last look, 90% of your tourism was American and Canadian...& we simply can’t fathom a government where they WON’T put protection measures and laws into place for their animals. And please don’t tell me “it’s complicated” or “unimportant”... because it’s neither of those. YOU have the power to change it...a woman who is hoping for more women in leadership positions. So prove to all of us...Arubans, Americans, Canadians, etc..WHY having women as leaders is so important! BE THE CHANGE! Please...for you, for your people, for the visitors of the beautiful island!"

"YOUR GOVERNMENT MURDERED THESE DOGS TODAY WITHOUT THE CONSENT ON THE OWNER (THEY WERE TAKEN OFF HIS LAND AND MURDERED) - SO MUCH FOR "ONE HAPPY ISLAND" - I FOR ONE WILL NOT VISIT UNTIL YOU HUMANELY TAKE CARE OF THE ANIMAL POPULATION THAT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY !!!!!"

This is just a look at what's going on in Aruba in terms of animal cruelty, it's so tragic and barbaric. Where is the enforcement of the anti-animal cruelty laws that were rolled out in July? Does our Government require us to beg at their inhumane feet? Every signature counts! Don't underestimate the power of an online petition.
