Artificial Lighting Is Affecting Sea Turtles- Ban The Lights
The Issue
Issue & Statement of Purpose: Artificial lighting is affecting and disorienting sea turtles. Artificial lighting is bad for tea turtles because it disorients them, and confuses their path to the ocean. Sea turtles use moonlight and the brightness of the horizon to know when they can go to the ocean, but when artificial lighting is blazing over them, they often get confused and make their way into the streets/ or find themselves in other dangerous situations. We would like to see a decrease in the harsh artificial lighting. Replacement can include lights closer to the ground/at a different angle, a different color for illumination, or discarding them altogether. Habitat restoration and nest protection could also be helped with. We could also try to encourage local governments to adopt policies that reduce light pollution, such as "dark sky" initiatives, which aim to preserve natural nightscapes and reduce human-caused light disruption. By taking these actions, individuals and communities can make a big difference in helping sea turtle hatchlings safely find their way to the ocean. Artificial lighting negatively affects turtles, which makes their journey to safety even more difficult, mainly because of all the other threats that target sea turtles. Sea turtle hatchlings face threats from artificial lighting, which disorients them and leads many to dangerous locations like resort pools and streets. This impacts their survival instincts and that of adults who navigate using natural light. In Florida, over 100,000 hatchlings are lost annually due to disorientation.
