South Arlington neighborhoods in danger of being washed away!

Dear Citizens of Arlington, Texas:

We ask you for your support on this concern involving safety and loss of private property in our community.

Severe stormwater erosion is occurring in south Arlington along a small waterway called “Misty Creek.” Private property, including yards and trees, are falling into the creek at an alarming rate. At least one home is directly at risk. The primary cause of the erosion comes from massive storm water runoff originating from commercial development approved by the City of Arlington along the South Cooper Street corridor between approximately Wal-Mart and Wimbledon Drive. Erosion has increased since the City completed a concrete drainage ditch upstream at Thames Drive and Mansfield Road in late 2020. Impacts include further removal of private property, impact to the natural environment, increased water pollution risks, and increased safety risks from falls into the deep-cut erosion and drowning during rain events. Arlington residents most impacted live along and near Misty Creek from approximately Wareham Drive to Bowen Road. As with any waterway concern, all residents downstream may be impacted with increased risk of erosion, water pollution, silt buildup, and flooding, including citizens living and working along Rush Creek in western portions of Arlington, in Dalworthington Gardens, Shady Valley, and Interlochen.

Residents ask the City of Arlington for IMMEDIATE MITIGATION to halt further erosion in the most impacted area, followed by long-term physical improvements to protect property and lives. In addition, residents ask the City to consider smart “green” solutions that will reduce impact to friends and fellow residents downstream.

The severe erosion area related to this petition exists primarily in the Estates Above Wimbledon and Wimbledon neighborhoods and was initiated by the ESTATES ABOVE WIMBLEDON HOME OWNERS ASSOCIATION.
