Feb. 7, 2016 We received a call about a severely injured dog, who was found just outside of Jacksonville. He had been shot through both front legs and left to die a cold, hard, lonely death. Two men found him, and although they were a little nervous, because he is a Pit Bull and because the wounds were so horrific, they took a chance. They picked him up and put him in their truck and started trying to find help for him. And eventually they found us. We got a text from another member of our rescue group and we couldn't say no. So we met Keith Lewis and his friend and got the dog transferred into our car and brought him home. The two front legs were just dangling, unusable. We suspected he had been out there for a day or two. He was muddy and bloody and in a great deal of pain. He was also very hungry. But he was also very sweet. His tail wagged in spite of the pain he must have been in. He licked our faces. He never once growled. He didn't bite or even nip, although I know we hurt him every time we moved him. The first vet who saw him recommended that we kill him. I could not do that. He deserved a chance. His temperament was just too loving. He had tried too hard just to survive. Fast forward to April 22, 2016. He has endured 4 surgeries and the loss of his left leg. Throughout everything he has remained sweet and loving. He has made a ton of friends, from all over the country and has supporters who have donated over $10,000 dollars to cover his medical bills. People just meet him and fall in love. I know we did. He has followers on his Facebook page who check in on him every day. He's not out of the woods yet. He still has 8 to 12 weeks of recuperation before he can be considered totally fit. But he'll get there. I'm telling his story here because of the fact that he's not so unusual. There are many Pit Bulls who would never consider biting anyone. They are so stoic about pain that they will calmly submit to things another breed would try to take your hand off for. There is no reason to fear them unless your intention is to harm a member of their pack. People sometimes say "They are Just Dogs, like any other dog." And that's sort of true in a way. But they are also more than that. They are loyal, courageous, happy, funny and fun-loving. The very idea that Captain Marvel could be considered "dangerous" is ludicrous. If ever a dog had a reason to bite, he did. But it never even crossed his mind. He was simply grateful to everyone who, he knew, was trying to help him. His surgeon's staff is in love with him. And they are located in a BSL town.
