As we all know, the Covid-19 situation has had a major impact on many people's lives. Small businesses, local organizations, parents, working-class citizens, and more have all been disrupted by the impact of this virus. One of these impacted groups happens to be Arizona State University's graduating class of May 2020.

The road to graduating from Arizona State University did not start when we arrived on campus. It began when we started our education career as children. Everyone has a different story and with every story are several obstacles one had to overcome. Whether it be constant relocation from school to school, not have access to educational resources compared to other districts, having to attend to important family situations, every single graduate has a story of what they overcame. But through it all, they still managed to get through all the changes as a young adult, make it through the complicated years of high school, and meet all the requirements to receive your 4-year degree from Arizona State University. For some, they are the first in their family to graduate from a 4-year university. For others, they are continuing their family's lineage and being the next member of their family to walk that stage and join the club.

This dream was all taken from us on the morning of April 2nd, 2020. Arizona State's President, Michael Crow, believes the best way to celebrate the hard work of this graduating class during these troubling times is to have a "virtual celebration" or to walk with the graduating classes of December 2020 or May 2021. For some, virtual celebrations might not be possible due to the lack of reliable internet connections, devices with access to the internet, or other issues. As to walking with a different class, throwing us in with another class is disrespectful. We did not go through all the hard work to be recognized with a different class. We EARNED our own graduation and the University should postpone the celebration to a different date.

Although specifying a specific date is almost impossible right now, it should be the step the University takes. The buildings that Arizona State uses for ceremonies are owned by Arizona State and there is no reason they cannot find one day open to prepare for this celebration. This petition aims to show Arizona State University and Michael Crow that we deserve better and they should be making more efforts to celebrate the graduating class of May 2020.
