Approve SB1190: EMTs Without MICs

The Issue

SB1190 is a bill designed to give minors the opportunity to get the medical attention they or their friends need without fear of being cited with a Minor In Possession (MIP) or Minor In Consumption (MIC).

Underaged college students and young adults are going to drink; it's just a fact of life. While many do so in moderation, there will always be those who drink to excess and need to seek appropriate medical attention. As the law stands now, any underaged person who has been drinking and calls 911 either for themselves or a friend will be cited with an MIP or an MIC. This creates a culture of fear surrounding reaching out for help while intoxicated. Because of this fear, many young people choose not to call for help and either handle the problem on their own or abandon their friend at the emergency room without sticking around to help medical staff understand their condition. Additionally, victims of sexual assault are discouraged from reporting their case because they were under the influence of alcohol when it happened and don't want to be cited.

No more victims of sexual assault should be shamed away from reporting their case. No more young people should have to abandon their friend because they are scared of getting in trouble. No more students should have to die because they don't want themselves or their friends to get an MIP or MIC.

We need to urge those who have the power to pass this bill to approve it and turn it into state law without adding additional amendments like diversion programs, which already exist in most cases around the state, but still bar young people from calling to get the help they need. We don't have one more year, or even one more day to wait for this. If this law can save just one life, then it deserves the vote of approval.
